Berendoi Ceremony for Baby - Part of Malay Culture

While in Seri Menanti Resort, I had an opportunity to witness the Berendoi ceremony.

I really don't know about this Malay ceremony until that day. It is a kind of baby welcoming ceremony.

For all Berendoi ceremony, there must be a nicely decorated swing at the mid of event venue. By the way, 'endoi' from berendoi word meaning swing that used to put baby to sleep.

To start off the ceremony, the men sitting in a big circle and women sitting at the side read and sang a few songs. The songs presented brought some advices to the baby to be obedient to their parents.

It is very tough to shoot the baby as he moved here and there in the swing, (other photos almost blurred) and I was lucky to have this shot. So, I like this photo a lot as his father was looking at him with full affection and the baby was looking at my camera.

Coming next is called 'cukur jambul'. The guests will cut some of the baby hairs and put on the tray. Then they will give some money back to the baby.

After a while, the baby started to cry. I think he may be frightened at that time.

The guests sat at the round table and were served with some snacks. It is a wonderful experience for me to witness the ceremony and know more about Malay culture. Hope you get something as well from my sharing.
